CHICAGO (July 24, 2013) - The 49th Chicago International Film Festival, held October 10-24, 2013, is tickled to present its Comedy Focus for the first time.

With the remarkable ability to translate across cultures, languages, and eras, comedy has been an integral part of film history from the very beginning. From Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, and the Marx brothers to Will Ferrell and Judd Apatow, audiences have been united by the universal experience of gathering in a theater and laughing together. This year, the Chicago International Film Festival will celebrate this tradition by highlighting the comedic side of international and independent cinema in a new Comedy Focus.

Programming Director Mimi Plauché commented, “Chicago has a long, celebrated culture of comedy, from improv theater to stand up. This year, through the Comedy Focus, the Festival will connect Chicago’s love of laughter with the world’s diverse comic sensibilities.  We will be showcasing everything from zany, dark Eastern European and madcap Asian fare to five decades of Italian humor to all shades and shapes of American hijinks.”

The breadth of films in the Comedy Focus will give Chicago audiences a taste of film comedy around the world, whether through laugh-out-loud shenanigans, witty romantic comedies, or politically-tinged dark comedies. Whatever the source of mirth, this section will reveal the wide-ranging comedic stylings within the Festival line-up, including feature narratives, short films, and even documentaries.

The Chicago International Film Festival Comedy Focus is presented by program partner Columbia College Chicago, which is introducing its BA in Theatre with a Concentration in Comedy Writing and Performance in Fall 2013. (
