CHICAGO, IL (October 20, 2014) – The 50th Chicago International Film Festival will present a unique three-dimensional experience for movie- and architecture-lovers alike on Wednesday, October 22, 6pm, at AMC River East 21 (322 E. Illinois St.). For Chicago, the center of architectural innovation, “Cathedrals of Culture” is a major cinematic event, as six internationally celebrated filmmakers uncover and explore the secret souls of six iconic edifices from around the globe. “Cathedrals of Culture” will be presented in two 90-minute programs, with a 30 minute intermission, beginning at 6 pm. Admission for this two-part presentation is $25.
The first segment begins with Wim Wenders wandering from niches to rooftops of the Berlin Philharmonic. Austrian nonfiction auteur Michael Glawogger explores the inner halls of the National Library of Russia. In a fascinating vignette, Danish filmmaker Michael Madsen examines Norway’s Halden Prison, reputed to be the world’s most humane jail. Underscored by music from Moby and images from award-winning director of photography Ed Lachman, Robert Redford focuses on the stark lines of California’s Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Norwegian filmmaker Margreth Olin covers the interior and environment of Oslo’s Opera House in Norway. Finally, Brazilian-born director Karim Aïnouz (also of “Futuro Beach,” an official selection of the 50th Chicago International Film Festival) offers a fitting, free-spirited look at Paris’ irreverent Centre Pompidou.
“Cathedrals of Culture” wonderfully employs 3D cinematography to offer a tactile and meditative tour through the structures on display. With moments of beauty, brilliance and insight, the project provides grand visual testament to the familiar expression, “If these walls could talk.”
